Non-degree Study in Mathematics - Information for Prospective Students

Mathematics Graduate Program

Students who wish to take graduate courses in mathematics without being in a degree program may apply for non-degree status.

The mathematics department is happy to welcome such students into its courses, but in the interest of both the student and the department, we aim to ensure that students are qualified to take the courses that they register for.

If you are interested in non-degree study, you should begin by sending an email to the mathematics graduate program director (grad-director@math.rutgers.edu) briefly summarizing:

  • Your objectives for non-degree study (including specific courses you want to take, if known).
  • Your mathematical background.
The graduate director will help determine an appropriate course of study. After this is done, it is a simple matter to satisfy the formal application requirements of the university as found on the FAQ page for graduate admissions
