• Homework frequency, due dates, and late HW
• Homework problems will be assigned weekly through postings on the web page, and will normally be due on Thursday.
• Homework is due at the beginning of the class period for which it is assigned, and late homework will normally not be accepted. (In extraordinary circumstances you may request (in writing) that late homework be accepted.)
• Only some of the assigned problems will be collected and graded, but it is important to do them all.
• Homework format
  • Most of the problems you will be assigned have a short answer. It is not enough to give the answer to a problem, you must explain (clearly and briefly) your reasoning to obtain the answer. You need not simplify numerical expressions; for example, if the answer is $\binom{7}{2} 6!$, you may leave the answer in this form. You did not have to calculate the answer (which in this case is 15120). Here are some sample problems with acceptable solutions.
  • To make it easier for the grader to evaluate your work adhere to the following guidelines.
    • Write clearly and legibly.
    • Use standard 8 by 11 sheets of paper with no ragged edges.
    • Your name should appear at the top of each page. Pages should be numbered and stapled together.
    • Leave enough space at the top of the first page for socres to be listed.
    • After each problem, if you received any assistance on the problem, or consulted an outside source, or collaborated with someone, you should acknowledge this (as discussed below under "Academic Integrity").
    • Cover page To help ensure that the grader does not miss problems include a cover page that has your name and a table with the following format:

      The first column lists all assigned problems (whether you did them or not) in the order that they are listed on the assignment . List theoretical problems with a "Th" before them. The second column lists the number of the page within your work that the problem appears. Write ``ND'' if the problem was not done. The third column is left blank.
• Collaboration, outside sources, and academic integrity: You will get the most benefit from the problem assignments if you do most of the work on your own. However, there is also a benefit to be gained by discussing problems with other students or with me, particularly if you are stuck on a problem. Here is my policy on outside help:
  • No written work pertaining to an assignment is to be given to or obtained from others.
  • You may discuss problems with others, but the final write-up of your solutions should be done independently. This means that you should not be sitting with other students when you write up your solutions.
  • I am fairly generous about giving hints and partial solutions to homework in my office hours. However, when we work on an assigned HW problem in office hours you can't take notes on my hints, but should understand them sufficiently to be able to reconstruct them yourself later. (You may take notes on other things discussed in office hours, such as unassigned problems.)
  • The solutions to many of the problems in this course can be found in the back of the book, or on the web, or from students who have taken this course previously. The problems are intended for you to do, not to look up, and you will get the most benefit from the homework by doing the problems yourself. If you do read about a problem elsewhere, then you should (a) do your write-up of the problem ``closed book'' which means that you should not be referring to the source when you write your solution. Your solution should be in your own words, and should demonstrate that you have gained an understanding of how to do the problem. (b) properly acknowledge the source you used(see below).
  • Proper acknowledgement of sources Discussions about a problem, hints received, etc. (including office hour hints), reference to books other than the course text, must be acknowledged in your homework. This means that immediately following your written solution, you should write something such as:

    ``Acknowledgement: John Smith gave me a hint on this problem'',

    ``Acknowledgement: I worked with Jane Jones on this problem'',

    or whatever is appropriate.
  • Failure to observe these restrictions will be treated as a violation of the Rutgers Academic Integrity Policy.
