"Behind the Scenes at Consumer Reports"
by
Abbe Herzig, PhD
Statistical Program Leader
at
Consumer Reports Health
In Mathematical Careers and Ideas, the Department of Mathematics is offering a series of talks for undergraduates. This is the next event in the series.
Consumer Reports was founded in 1936 when advertising first flooded the mass media, with the mission to work for a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers and to empower consumers to protect themselves. Abbe Herzig has been a statistician at Consumer Reports for almost 25 years. In this presentation, she will talk about some of the interesting projects she has worked on, and the varied way statistical and mathematical thinking impact the findings reported by Consumer Reports. She will draw from examples including cars, bicycle accident rates and the effect of wearing a helmet, tests of lawn sprinklers, and deadly hospital infections
