Subject: Alumni Luke Higgins

Hello, I am looking to contact Luke Higgins who was a student in the Math Department in the late 1990's. I have some genealogical information he was seeking on our common ancestors Henley and Semones. The last address I've been able to find was Luke.Higgins@distvin.com.au, but that doesn't seem to work either. If you would be so kind to forward this e-mail to him or provide me with his current e-address I would greatly appreciate your efforts.

Regards,
Michael Green

News Item: I have been working in the financial industry for 7 years now since leaving Rutgers in 1997. I would be interested in assisting smart Rutgers grad students move into Wall Street as well.

I'm writing with two news items:

1. The ex-manager at my first Wall Street job asked if I could refer 2 or 3 young smart people to his company. He is looking to fill quantitative programming roles at a Reinsurance company. The work involves C++, Python. I can vouch for the fact that he is a very nice guy. Great manager. If there are Math Dept students who are finishing up their degrees and looking for their first Wall St job, I can pass their names along to him.

2. Randall Fairman, a former Rutgers Math PhD, has retired from Wall Street to a comfortable 25 acre farm in Maine.

Subject: Alumni network

Hi, I am writing to join the alumni math work. I'm an actuarial student living and working in Hartford and since Rutgers does not have an acturial math program I think I can provide a lot of information to any students that may be interested in the profession. When I attended Rutgers I did not know about the field until I was a junior and it there are many opportunities in the field for math majors.

I graduated from University College in 1995 with High Honors. Mine was a computer orientated mathematics major, and it's the computer skills that I have mostly come to use, with (regrettably) minimal use of my mathematics skills. However, the high standards of Rutgers made it easy for me to excel compared to people from other schools.

Regarding interns, our company (at least my area of it) usually only hires computer or MIS students, and the work they do is limited to installing and configuring software. Not very exciting for mathematics majors, but not the worst internship job either.

I am very grateful for my experience at Rutgers. I often wish I never had to leave.

In your last newsletter you expressed interest in hearing from your alumni, so I thought I would drop you a line, since I received my Ph.D. at Rutgers in 1983. My advisor was Tom Spencer, now at IAS. I'm now Professor of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Arizona. (I'm a voting member of two departments, though I try to stay out of Physics Department politics.)

It would be good to see a list of Rutgers Math Ph.D.s who are now faculty members at research universities. The only other one I know personally is Jan Wehr, who is also here at Arizona, though I know of a few others, such as Abby Thompson at UC Davis and Heinz Schaettler at Washington University in St. Louis.

I appreciate your keeping me up to date by sending me your departmental newsletter. My research interests have moved somewhat away from mathematical physics, so I don't often attend Joel Lebowitz's statistical mechanics conferences.

Subject: Spring 2003 Math Dept. Newsletter

In your spring 2003 newsletter, you mentioned the need for individuals to come to campus to speak to math majors about job opportunities in industry. As a Rutgers (math major, class of 1980) alum, I'd be glad to come to campus and speak about actuarial careers. In fact, I've done this a few times in the past, but not in the last several years. My point of contact on those occasions was Professor Roe Goodman.

Our firm, located at 270 Davidson Avenue in Somerset, usually does offer internship opportunities for students interested in actuarial careers. I can be contacted by phone, fax or e-mail as shown below.

Subject: Looking for a colleague

I received my Ph.D. in Math from Rutgers in 1982, in topology under the direction of Dr. Julius Shaneson. One of my fellow students was Terrence Lindgren, who was in Topos Theory working with Dr. Miles Tierney. I believe he finished his doctorate in 1983 or 84.

Do you have an address or contact for Terry Lindgren?

Thanks for the help.

I am a 1987 graduate of Rutgers College (Mathematics BA). This is a response to the Rutgers Mathematics Department (New Brunswick) Newsletter - Spring, 2002.

I work for Mercer Human Resource Consulting. Mercer is the largest employer of actuaries in the US. We are continuously looking to hire actuaries and other mathematically/financially oriented employees at all levels. We also offer a college student summer intern program.

I would be happy to help coordinate any type of relevant business contact activity that you are trying to accomplish.
