Sections 16.7 and 17.5 of the syllabus will not be covered in this class and no exam questions will be based on the material in these sections. | ||
I'll be in my office (Hill 542) on Friday, May 7, from 1 to 3 in the afternoon, and will be happy to answer questions. If many students show up, I'll find a room for us to work in and leave a message on my door. Also I'll be available on Monday, May 10, from 6 to 8 PM. I'll again be available on Tuesday, May 11, from 3 to 5 PM. | ||

What is it? | Handed out or posted |
---|---|---|
More exam 2 problems | These are optional problems which students could use to improve their grades on the second exam. Here are brief remarks about grading these problems and adjusting exam grades. | 5/13/2004 |
More exam 1 problems | These are optional problems which students could use to improve their grades on the first exam. The Laplace transform formula sheet was also handed out. Here are brief remarks about grading these problems and adjusting exam grades. | 5/13/2004 |
Exam 3 | Exam 3, in a somewhat more compact form. This formula sheet was also included. The misprints discovered by Mr. Cohen in problem 7's boundary conditions have been corrected, as they were on the board during the exam. Here is a discussion of the grades and the grading of the third exam and here is how course grades were determined. | 5/13/2004 |
Formula sheet for the third exam | The formula sheet for the third exam, with additions made as a result of student suggestions. Some orthogonality formulas have been added. | 5/11/2004 |
Draft formula sheet for the third exam | Here is a draft of a formula sheet to be handed out with the third exam. Comments, suggestions, and corrections are invited. | 5/5/2004 |
Review problems for the third exam | Here is a collection of review problems for the third
exam. Solutions to all problems are available here. Some errors in the answers have been
corrected (5/10/2004) thanks to several students.
Should a formula sheet be constructed? What should
be on it? Optional portions of the third exam will be available for students who wish to improve their grades in the first two exams. There is already a great deal of material available here for review of Laplace transforms and linear algebra. | 4/29/2004 |
Heat flows | The initial value problem for the heat equation with initial data just a box and with 0 boundary conditions. The pictures show how quickly the heat flows away. | 4/27/2004 |
Fourier series examples | Some pictures of Fourier series partial sums and related Maple commands | 4/13/2004 |
Answers to Exam 2 | Answers to the second exam. Here is a discussion of the grades and the grading. | 4/11 /2004 |
Exam 2 | Exam 2, in a somewhat more compact form. The last page displayed is entitled New Jersey birds. It is list of some matrices and their RREF's. Some entries are useful in several problems. The embarrassingly wrong minus sign in the RREF for Mosquito discovered by some students taking the exam has been deleted! | 4/11/2004 |
Review problems for the second exam | Here is a collection of review problems for the second exam. Solutions sent by students for all problems are here. Students are encouraged to submit answers to problems, and I hope that all students will send me at least one. Students may work together or submit answers to parts of problems (see, for example, problem #14 which is rather long). A useful list of New Jersey trees is also supplied. | 3/18/2004 |
Answers to Exam 1 | Answers to the first exam. Here is a discussion of the grades and the grading. Please look at some comments about the results of the exam. | 2/26/2004 |
Exam 1 | Exam 1, in a somewhat more compact form. | 2/26/2004 |
The formula sheet used on the exam | The formula sheet, amended and corrected, as was handed out on the exam. | 2/26/2004 |
Review problems for the first exam | A sheet of review problems for the first exam. Students have prepared some answers. | 2/16/2004 |
Draft formula sheet Second draft |
This is a draft of a formula sheet to be handed out in a
week at the first exam. Corrections are certainly
requested. Reasonable suggestions for additions may be adapted. Please
send e-mail to the instructor. An expanded formula sheet is now available, following suggestions by Mr. Ivanov, Ms. Mudrak, and Mr. Wilson. | 2/23/2004 |
An award! | This certificate was distributed to some students for meritorious behaviour during the Laplace transform part of the course. They came to class. Sigh. | 2/11/2004 |
The Entrance "exam" | The purpose of this assignment is to give insight to students very
early in the course about some of the methods to be used. Familiarity
with all of the material tested here is necessary for success in this
course. Also students can see what the grading of the instructor is like! Solutions are due on Thursday, January 22. A further hint for #3 and a comment for #7. | 1/20/2004 |
Information sheet | A sheet to be passed out on the first day of class. | 1/19/2004 |
