Latest and last news

Today (5/12/2006) I finally submitted grades on the Registrar's computer for these sections of Math 251. I hope that students will be able to see the grades very soon.
I apologize, especially to students in sections 5, 6, and 7, for the delay. Several students in those sections had exam conflicts and took the final exam on May 10 with sections 8, 9, and 10. I don't know how to assign grades to part of a class on the computer, so I had to wait until all sections had taken the exam.

Final exams

The final exam for sections 5, 6, and 7 will be given on Friday, May 5, 2006 from 12-3 PM in SERC 117.
The lecturer will have office hours in Hill 542 from 4 to 6 PM on Thursday, May 4. He will answer e-mail and he may meet students at other mutually agreeable times. There will be a review session on Thursday, May 4, in SERC 203 from 8 to 10 PM.
The final exam for sections 8, 9, and 10 will be given on Wednesday, May 10, 2006 8-11 AM in Pharmacy 111.
The lecturer will have office hours in Hill 542 from 4 to 6 PM on Tuesday, May 9. He will answer e-mail and he may meet students at other mutually agreeable times. There will be a review session on Tuesday, May 9, in SERC 203 from 8 to 10 PM.
Students must attend the final exam scheduled for their section. Students must apply in writing for any exception.

A version of the final exam Here is a version of the final exam in a somewhat more compact form. Here is a discussion of the grades and grading. There are details of partial credit assignment. There are no solutions available for this exam.
Here is a very brief discussion of how course grades were determined.

Review problems for the final exam These problems are mostly from past exams in this course. Answers are available. A correction was made today (4/28/2006) thanks to Mr. Walawalkar. Another correction was made today (5/4/2006) thanks to Professor Cook and one of his students.
There may be too much review material, especially if you look at our old review material and the exams already given. Here is a link to a real 251 exam written and given by Professor Ferry. I think the exam has appropriate length and difficulty.
The final exam will be cumulative, covering all of the material in the course. There will be slightly more emphasis on material discussed since the last exam. Again, no calculators or notes or material other than the distributed formula sheet may be used during the exam.

Draft formula sheet for the final exam Again, if you have comments, corrections, or suggested additions please send e-mail. I sincerely tried to include formulas which I believe would be useful on the exam. 4/23/2006
Answers to the second exam Here are answers to the second exam. Please let me know if you have comments or corrections.
A misprint in the answer to 8a) has been corrected (4/14), and I am sorry that I do not know the name of the student who advised me about the error.
Here is a discussion of the grades and grading. There are details of partial credit assignment. Comments and complaints about the grading should be directed to the lecturer.

The second exam Here is one version of the second exam, in a somewhat more compact format. The possibly confusing dV in the second problem has been changed to dA. Realize please, that three people, with total IQ well above 250, proofread the exam. I'm sorry. The formula sheet had no changes from the draft version. 4/11/2006
Review problems for the second exam These problems are mostly from past exams in the course. There's information what the exam will cover (up to and including lecture 20, which is section 16.3 of the text with some sections listed in the syllabus omitted), and some exam rules.
Do you want to be famous? Each letter of the alphabet (except for Y and Z) has been given a problem. Contribute to the general welfare by sending me a solution for some problems.
Here are the student solutions so far.

Draft formula sheet for the second exam If you have comments, corrections, or suggested additions please send e-mail. I sincerely tried to include formulas which I believe would be useful on the exam. Adding much other information would likely reduce the utility of the formula sheet, and perhaps what's on it is already too much. 3/28/2006
Information about the third Maple assignment The third Maple assignment is here and information to help you with it is here.
Students who are registered for the course as of Saturday morning, March 25, will get information necessary for this Maple assignment. If you have not gotten the information and you believe you should have, please send me e-mail. This assignment will be worth 20 points.
3/25/2006
The third group of workshop problems Students should write solutions and hand in their work at the next recitation on March 22. Their efforts will be judged both for presentation and mathematical correctness. Please see here for more information about what we expect, and here for information about grading.
Students in sections 5, 6, and 7, taught by Mr. Ilinca, should hand in solutions to problem 5, and may hand in solutions to problem 3 for extra credit. Students in sections 8, 9, and 10, taught by Mr. Zarechnak, should hand in solutions to problem 3.

Answers to the first exam Here are answers to the first exam. Please let me know if you have comments or corrections. Small corrections to the answers for problems 4 and 8 have been made due to Mr. Walawalkar and Mr. Sadakh and I thank them for this. Two more "misprints" (small errors?) were detected by L. Pudwell, the head TA for the course, and I thank her additionally.
Here is a discussion of the grades and grading. There are details of partial credit assignment, and a small forecast about a problem on the second exam.

The first exam Here is one version of the first exam, in a somewhat more compact format. The annoying misprint in the last problem (6 should have been 5) is corrected. Four instructors who proofread the exam didn't see this, but at least three students taking the exam found it. 2/28/2006
The second group of workshop problems Students should write solutions to problem #4 and hand in their work at recitation. Their efforts will be judged both for presentation and mathematical correctness. Please see here for more information about what we expect, and here for information about grading. 2/15/2006
Review problems for the first exam These problems are mostly from past exams in the course. There's information what the exam will cover (up to and including lecture 9, which is section 14.6 of the text), and some exam rules.
Do you want to be famous? Each letter of the alphabet (except for Y and Z) has been given a problem (in several cases letters share a long problem). Contribute to the general welfare by sending me a solution for the problem whose letter begins your last name. Here are the solutions so far.

Revised formula sheet for the first exam The a draft formula sheet for the first exam had two errors. One was noticed during the exam and mentioned. Another was not noticed, and several students who depended on the formula sheet used the mistaken equation. It has been fixed here. In the future, please do look at the draft.
