An Inelegant (but Short(!)) Proof of a Major Index Theorem of Garsia and Gessel

The shortest proof is not always the prettiest. While the present proof is (probably) shorter than the original proof, and definitely shorter than Moti Novick's recent proof, it is definitely less elegant than Novick's proof.
