If you try to prove something and don't succeed, try and try again. Then generalize!, no use being a damn fool about it, and keep trying to prove the original statement.

The determinants trivially evaluated here are very "prestigious", they first appeared in that paragon of mathematical snootiness called "Annals of Mathematics". But don't worry, dear Annals editors, we are not even trying to submit to you, since we know that you only publish hard-to-understand proofs, and our proofs are so easy (and so what if they immediately imply stuff published by you).
