Preparation for the second exam, Math 152:1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, & 9, spring 2009

General instructions
The second exam will be given on Monday, April 20, at the usual class times and locations. This exam will primarily cover the material in lectures 11 through 20 (Ratio & Root Tests) of the syllabus. These topics are those which are (or will be!) written about in
part 2 of the diary. The Ratio Test will be discussed on Wednesday, April 8, and the Root Test, on Monday, April 13. The material about power series done on both of those days will not be tested on the second exam. Both the textbook and course diary should be good general sources for the material to be tested.
-lease note the word "primarily": since calculus is a cumulative subject, knowledge of previously covered material is important, but the emphasis will be on what was discussed in the designated lectures, and the associated textbook homework problems and workshop problems.

The cover sheet for your exam will state:

Show your work. An answer alone may not receive full credit.
No texts, notes, or calculators may be used on this exam other than the formula sheet supplied with this exam.
Find exact values of standard functions such as e0 and sin(Π/2).
Otherwise do NOT "simplify" your numerical answers!

From the course coordinator
The course coordinator (who will be the principal author of the final exam) has prepared some review problems for the second exam. These will be discussed during the class meetings on Thursday, April 16. There will also be time for questions during that meeting. Prepared students should find this very useful. Please note regarding the fourth problem: it isn't mine -- I don't drink coffee.

Second exam formula sheet
This a formula sheet which will be handed out with your exam. Please get familiar with what is on the sheet. Students who need to consult formula sheets extensively tend to be students who are not adequately prepared. They generally don't do well.

One of my old exams
I will write your second exam. I gave Math 152 last spring and the spring before that.

Spring 2008 Here is a link to the second exam in spring 2008, and here is a link to some answers. I strongly suggest that students try to answer the questions before looking at these answers. Please note that problem 8 on that exam is (nominally!) about power series, so officially it is not part of what our exam will test. However, you may wish to look at it anyway, since the questions asked can be answered using techniques which will be tested. Improper integrals were covered on the first exam last spring. So you can look at problem 6 on this exam (with solution here).

Spring 2007 You may also wish to look at the previous spring's exams. In particular, the problems on the second exam (except for the last problem) are certainly appropriate for this course at this time in the semester. Solutions are here. Again, although problem 5 nominally refers to power series, the methods of solution should all be known now to you. Improper integrals were also tested that semester on the first exam. So you may see problem 2 on previous spring's first exam (answer available here).

Review Session
I'll have a review session on Sunday, April 19, from 5 to 7 PM in SEC 117. This is not intended to be a substitute for your own work. You must prepare by doing homework problems, workshop problems, and the supplied review problems by yourself or with others. If I could do things by watching others, I would easily hit 50 major league home runs each year. Attendance at this session will not be adequate preparation for students who have done little work on their own.
