Or by appointment. LECTURES -- SPRING 2020 TuFr 10:20 -- 11:40am, Room: Hill 009 ATTENDANCE Attendance is mandatory. You are responsible for all information presented in every lecture. LEARNING GOALS We will study number theory through the lens of rational quadratic forms. Topics include: modular arithmetic, p-adic numbers, and local and global representations by quadratic forms. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS Every week there will be homework problems given out during class, which are no longer collected on Fridays at the beginning of class. The detailed list is available on the syllabus page. Late homework will not be accepted. HOMEWORK POLICY You are encouraged to work on solving the homework problems with other students. But when you write up your final solutions, you must work alone. At the top of the first page, list the names of the students with whom you collaborated. QUIZZES We will have several 15 minute quizzes on accumulated subject matter (lectures and homework). They are not meant to be a big source of stress; rather their intent is to ensure one stays on top of the material. EXAMS There are two midterms and one final exam. The dates are: Midterm 1: March 3rd Midterm 2: April 10th Final Exam: May 13th, 8 - 11 am GRADING Your course grade will be computed as follows: Final Exam: 40% 45% Midterms: 30% 40% (15% 20% each) Quizzes: 15% total Homework: 15% total CHEATING Any work suspected of being copied or otherwise fraudulently represented will immediately result in a failing grade for the course, and will be persecuted to the highest extent allowed by University Policy.
