A Combinatorial Problem That Arose in Biophysics

By Doron Zeilberger

Appeared in: Fibonacci Quarterly 27 (1989), 372.

I first found out about the beautiful work of the theoretical chemist and biophysicist Terrell Hill from Roy Caplan, my wife's postdoc advisor, back in 1980. This lead to a paper with Roy about the "Hill Diagrams" method. One day Terrell sent me a copy of his 1987 book, that contained a beautiful conjecture, that is proved in this note.
