Gert Almkvist's generalization of a mistake of Bourbaki

by Doron Zeilberger

Appeard in Contemporary Mathematics 143 (1993) (special volume in memory of Emil Grosswald, edited by Marvin Knopp and Mark Sheingorn), 609-612.

Nicolas Bourbaki was too busy developing structures that he overlooked that a certain exponent was off by one. Gert Almkvist noticed this and generalized it beautifully. His brilliant idea can be used to prove many other results.

[Added Dec. 19, 2019: Sadly Gert Almkvist died on Nov. 24, 2018. He was one of the most original mathematicians that I have known]
