I didn't actually need for you to send me the paper. What I really needed was to hear from you first hand that you want to submit it for possible publication, in other words, that we have your permission to consider it for that purpose. I am happy to take the message that you just sent as that permission. So there is no need for you to do anything else just now. I hereby consider that the paper has been officially submitted. You'll hear from me again when the refereeing, editing, etc. process has been completed, and thanks for submitting the paper to our Journal. Herbert S. So your paper is hereby accepted. The next thing is that it has to be formatted for publication. Roughly that means that it need running heads across the top of each page, and the dates of submission and acceptance should be inserted. The latter can be given as September 4, 1996 and September 26, 1996, respectively. When the paper is properly formatted, then the final thing is that I will assign it a paper number of the form "Rnn", and that number will get inserted into the running heads. Then there's nothing to do but send me the final PostScript file and the source TeX file, and we'll publish the paper. The complete instructions on how to do the above are contained in our Web page "Preparing your paper for publication ...", which can be reached from the link on our joint home page at http://ejc.math.gatech.edu:8080/Journal/ejc-wce.html If anything about this process seems unclear, including how to send the papers here when you're finished, please feel very free to ask me or Dr. Zeilberger. We'll be happy to help. We both think the paper is very fine indeed. Cordially, Herbert S. Wilf *********************************************************************** Herbert S. Lattices'' by L. Williams Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Status: RO On July 9th, 1945, I was 14 years old and lived in an apt in NYC, on W 72nd St., while my father was raising money for the Irgun. There was a Perseid meteor shower that night, and it was forecast to be unusually active, and I was an avid amateur astronomer (my Bar-Mitzvah presents were all very technical things about astronomy, at my request). So I went up to the roof of the apt house on West 72nd and I watched the meteors all night. For each meteor I plotted its track on a star map, estimated its brightness, color, etc. At the end of the night, or I should say the morning, I had tabulated about 50 meteors. I sent my observations in to the American Meteor Society, whose HQ was then at the UofPA. The president of that society wrote me back saying that I had more events than anyone else in the country and that he was going to publish my events. Sure enough, in Sky and Telescope magazine, soon thereafter, a summary of my observations appeared. So that was my first publication. Soon after finishing the thank-you notes for my Bar Mitzvah.
