Linear Algebra (fifth edition) by Friedberg/Insel/Spence.

Materials to be covered: I plan to cover Chapters 1-2: Vector Spaces and Linear Transformations, before Exam 1, Chapters 3-5: Systems of Equations, Determinants, Eigenvectors before Exam 2 and Chapter 7: Jordan Canonical Form

Evaluation : 

Exam 1, Friday, October 11, 5:00-6:20pm in the class (SEC 216 (Busch)).
You should know the proofs of the following theorems for Exam1: Theorem 1.2, Theorem 1.5, Theorem 1.7, Theorem 1.9, Theorem 1.10, Corollary 1 (page 47), Corollary 2 (page 48), Theorem 2.2, Theorem 2.3, Theorem 2.5, Theorem 2.6, Theorem 2.9, Theorem 2.15, Theorem 2.19.

Exam 2, Tuesday, November 19, 5:00-6:20pm, in the class (SEC 216 (Busch)).
You should know the proofs of the following theorems for Exam 2: Theorem 3.5,Theorem 3.6 (just the statement, not the proof), Corollary 1, Corollary 2, Corollary 3, Theorem 3.8 and its corollary, Theorem 3.11, Theorem 3.15, Theorem 4.4 and its Corollary, Theorem 4.5, Theorem 4.6 and the Corollary, Theorem 4.7 and its Corollary, Theorem 4.9, Theorem 5.5 and its Corollary, Theorem 5.6, Theorem 5.7, Theorem 5.8, Theorem 5.10, Theorem 6.2.

Final Exam:Friday, December 20, 8-11am in SEC-216. Final exam will cover chapters 1 through 6 (all sections that were covered in the class; from chapter 6 we covered 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.5). Do the review problems for midterm 1, midterm 2 and also Final exam review.

There will be no make up midterm exams offered unless due to a medical emergency in which case a note from a doctor is required.

Exams : There will be two closed book midterm exams tentatively scheduled for the above dates. You are not allowed to use a calculator during the midterm and final exams.  The final exam will be cumulative (covers all material).  It will count for 35 % of your final grade.

Homework : Homeworks will be assigned weekly. Two lowest homework grades will be dropped and therefore no late homeworks will be accepted. Required homework assignments will be found here.
Homework is due on Fridays in the class.
The first homework is due on Friday, September 13th. The two lowest homework grades will be dropped. [ Read 146 lines ]
