Preparation for the first exam in 250:1 & 5

The exam to be given at the usual class times and places on Wednesday, March 2, will cover the material in lectures 1 through 9 of the syllabus. (There won't be very much, if anything, asked about 2.5, though.)

I will have a review session in Hill 124 from 7 to 9 PM on Tuesday, March 1. Please do not ask me to go over material for which you already have solutions! (One example is the contents of the Zeilberger links below.) I will bring a silicon friend so that you won't have to watch me make errors finding the RREF of a matrix. Hill 124 is not too large, and if too many (?) people show up, we can try to find a vacant room over in SEC (there are such rooms as my explorations on Tuesday evening February 22 confirmed).

I will construct the exam with the following "resources" in mind: my lectures and the examples in the lectures, the homework problems (both those which were graded and those on the list of suggested homework problems), the quizzes which were given, and the material linked below written by Professor Zeilberger. You should expect to be asked for definitions and simple examples. You should expect True/False questions, and complete answers to such questions will include examples illustrating why the statement is false and some general explanation if the assertion is called true. More about this is here.

No formula sheets and no calculators may be used on the exam.

More specifically, the cover sheet for your exam will state:

Show your work. An answer alone may not receive full credit.
No texts, notes, or calculators may be used on this exam.
"Simplification" of answers is not necessary.

However, in an effort to reduce purposeless computation, I have created this zoo. A copy of this will be given to every student along with the first exam. What's on this page is the output of certain Maple commands. A few entries are slightly strange.
The first exam will still have some row operations and arithmetic, but I hope that students will be able to use the information on this page to answer some questions on the exam and reduce their computational effort!

Last semester Professor Zeilberger taught two sections of Math 250 (sound familiar?). He has kindly allowed me to refer to his review material and to his old exams. For the first exam, this is quite relevant. My exams will not be identical to his, but I expect that many of the questions will be quite similar so the material is definitely useful for you.
