- A three-year-old chestnut colt by Dr Devious (Ire)-Memory Green,
by Green Forest.
- Bred in Ireland by Mount Coote Stud. Two Irish-bred horses have
won the Belmont - Cavan in 1958 and Go and Go in 1990.
- Nine horses bred outside the United States have won the Belmont
Stakes. The last was Victory Gallop, a Canadian-bred who won the 1998
running.
- Lost his career debut on the turf at Newmarket last October, but
has since recorded three straight victories for trainer Gerard
Butler. His most recent victory came on May 10th at Chester
- Has had a total of four career starts, each at a different track
and with a different jockey, a trend that will continue in the
Belmont.
- Has made three of his four career starts on turf. He won his only
start on dirt, a stake at England's Lingfield on November 9th. It was
the first victory on his active three-race winning streak.
- Will be the third Belmont starter for owner Barry Irwin of Team
Valor Stable. In 1992, he supplemented the English-bred My Memoirs to
the Belmont. My Memoirs posted a runner-up finish to A.P. Indy. Team
Valor also owned a share of Thomas Jo, who finished third in the 1998
Belmont.
- "He is on the same schedule as My Memoirs," said owner Barry
Irwin. "Both won the Dee Stakes as their Belmont prep, and Dr
Greenfield's time in the Dee Stakes was 1/100th of a second faster
than My Memoirs."
- According to Irwin, Dr Greenfield "has an interesting combination
of stamina and speed."
- Will be trainer Gerard Butler's first career Belmont starter.
- "This is a big, strong horse and a mile and a half will not be a
problem for him," Butler said. "And, he has the speed to get where he
has to be. I couldn't be happier with where he is right now."
- According to owner Barry Irwin, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott
will assume the training duties for Dr Greenfield after the Belmont
Stakes.
- "We bought the horse to run in the U.S., but I wanted to keep him
in Europe to prepare for the Belmont because I thought a horse can get
fitter [over there]," Irwin said.
- Dr Greenfield will be jockey Edgar Prado's second career Belmont
starter. Last year, he rode Postponed to a seventh-place finish.
- Expected to arrive at Belmont Park on Wednesday, June 6th after he
clears a 36-hour quarantine in Newburgh, N.Y.
