Transportation and Directions
Rutgers University has several campuses in New Brunswick/Piscataway. The Hill
Center is on the Busch Campus in Piscataway. The University Inn and Conference
Center is on the Cook/Douglass Campus in New Brunswick. There is also the
College Avenue Campus in New Brunswick and the Livingston Campus in Piscataway.
Hence, a sign indicating an exit is for Rutgers may not take you where you
want to go. Some useful things to know are that the Rutgers football stadium
is on the Busch Campus very close to the Hill Center and that a river
separates New Brunswick from Piscataway.
The nearest airport is Newark Liberty Airport, about 40 minutes by car
from the Hill Center. From the airport, the cheapest way to get to
Rutgers is to take the
Airtrain
to New Brunswick and then a taxi (or campus bus) to the Hill Center.
There is also shuttle service offered by the State Shuttle (1-800-427-3207).
Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. The cost from Newark Airport
to the University Inn and Conference Center is $39.00 (slightly higher
after 10:30PM or before 5AM).
New Jersey Transit trains stop at the New Brunswick train station.
The closest station for Amtrak trains is at MetroPark, about a 25 minute
car ride from the Hill Center.
Parking for participants is available behind the Hill center. Those expecting
to park in the parking lots should send e-mail in advance to
mastrian@math.rutgers.edu, requesting a temporary parking permit which will be
sent by mail. This permit needs to be prominently displayed on the dashboard
with all requested information filled in.
Directions to the Hill Center
FROM THE NEW JERSEY TURNPIKE: Take Exit 9 and proceed north (west) on
New Jersey Route 18. It is recommended that you use either of the two leftmost
lanes of Route 18. Follow Route 18 through New Brunswick and across the John
A. Lynch Memorial Bridge. (Ignore the "George Street Rutgers University"
exit.) Exit Route 18 at Campus Road (the sign also says Rutgers Stadium and
Busch Campus). At the traffic circle, turn right onto Bartholomew Road. At the
stop sign, turn left onto Brett Road. Follow Brett road until it vanishes in a
maze of parking lots. Park in lot 64, 60A, 60B (or at lot 67 near Brett and
Bartholomew Roads) and put your parking permit in the front window. If you do
not have a permit, leave a note that you are visiting the Department of
Mathematics. The Hill Center is the seven story dark brick building, located
just behind the CoRE building.
FROM INTERSTATE HIGHWAY 287: Take the exit marked "River Road, Bound
Brook, Highland Park" (exit 9), following River Road east toward Highland
Park. Continue on River Road past Colgate and past the traffic light at Hoes
Lane. At the next left turn lane (not the next possible next left turn), turn
left onto Sutphen Rd. At the 4 way stop just beyond the stadium, turn left and
follow Frelinghuysen Road. At the traffic circle, continue straight onto
Bartholomew Road (i.e., ignore the first right turn and do not continue around
the circle). At the stop sign, turn left onto Brett Road. Follow Brett road
until it vanishes in a maze of parking lots. Park as indicated above.
Note: If you miss the left turn onto Sutphen Rd., you will soon pass
under the overpass for Route 18. Make the next left onto Route 18 North. Exit
Route 18 at Campus Road (the sign also says Rutgers Stadium and Busch
Campus). At the traffic circle, turn right onto Bartholomew Road. At the stop
sign, turn left onto Brett Road. Follow Brett road until it vanishes in a maze
of parking lots. Park as indicated above.
Directions to the University Inn and Conference Center
Directions from the Hill Center to the University Inn
and Conference Center
After exiting the parking lot onto Brett road, continue until the stop sign
and turn right onto Bartholomew Road. At the traffic circle, go 3/4 of the way
around and exit the circle. Then stay in the right lane which will place you
on Route 18 South. Move out of the right lane which exits and continue on
Route 18 South until Commercial Avenue and then turn right. Turn left at the
first traffic light onto George Street. Continue on George Street until the
road bends left and then take a right turn onto Ryders Lane (formerly Clifton
Avenue). The University Inn and Conference Center entrance is the first
driveway on your left.
Directions from the University Inn
and Conference Center to the Hill Center
Turn right at the parking lot exit. At the first intersection, you must turn
right (which is why this is not exactly the reverse of the directions above).
You can then make a U-turn by turning right at the traffic light which appears
immediately, going around the loop, and turning left at the light. You are
now back on George Street. Turn right at the traffic light at Commercial
Avenue and then left at the first traffic light onto Route 18 North. Continue
on Route 18 North over the John A. Lynch Memorial Bridge. (Ignore the "George
Street Rutgers University" exit.) Exit Route 18 at Campus Road (the sign also
says Rutgers Stadium and Busch Campus). At the traffic circle, turn right onto
Bartholomew Road. At the stop sign, turn left onto Brett Road. Follow Brett
road until it vanishes in a maze of parking lots. Park as indicated above.
Taxi service from the University Inn to the Hill Center costs approximately
$10. Contact Yellow Cab (732-246-2222).
Lunch on Friday
There are two lunch choices on the Busch Campus within a short walk of the
Hill Center, located next to each other. The first is the Busch Campus
Center, which serves fast food (Chinese, Indian, deli sandwiches, pizza,
Wendy's). The second is the Busch (Faculty) Dining Hall, which has a
salad bar, a grill (hamburgers, chicken), a deli counter for sandwiches,
several already prepared entrees each day, and several choices made to order.
