St. Andrews History of Mathematics Archive

The History of Mathematics archive is part of the Mathematical MacTutor system developed at the School of Mathematical and Computational Sciences University of St Andrews for learning and experimenting with mathematics.

The archive contains the biographies of more than 1100 mathematicians. You can access them from a selection of Alphabetical or Chronological Biographical indexes.

They have written some articles on the development of mathematical ideas cross-referenced to the biographies. You can access these using the History Topics Index. Take a look at the following example, a page on the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra .

The biographical material is cross-referenced to mathematical material, so you can also use this site as a jumping-off point for the exploration of mathematics (not just its history). For example, at the end of the page devoted to Gauss, you will find:

The archive also includes extensive links to other History of Mathematics resources.
