This course will probably seem like quite a change of pace after two semesters of Calculus. You have probably seen someof the computational aspects of the material we will cover - matrices and elementary operations involving them. We will place much greater emphasis on the underlying concepts (though you will still need to know the algorithms to illustrate the concepts).
Homework problems will be assigned each week, due in the Monday lecture the following week. The list of problems and their due dates for the semester (week by week) is included on a separate webpage. You should do all of the assigned problems. Each week I will designate a number of problems to be handed in and graded. We will occasionally have an in-class quiz as well.
Working the problems is the only way you will learn the material - most of your study time should be spent doing problems. Do not focus solely on the problems which are to be handed in. Homework problems also count toward your final grade - roughly 60 points out of a total of 460.
The exam schedule is included in the syllabus. Each hourly exam will count for 100 points out of 460, and the final exam willcount for 200 points out of 460.
Please take advantage of my
office hours - the only way to learn the material is to do lots of
problems, and office hours are the best opportunity to ask questions
about the problems. My office is in Hill Center 244. You
may also contact me by e-mail - my address
is cherlin@math.rutgers.edu. My regular office hours are on Busch
Campus, but I am also available after class Monday and Wednesday.
