Preliminary Announcement; Summer workshop on groups and algebras in M-theory May 31 - June 4, 2005 Department of Mathematics Rutgers University Modern particle physics could not have progressed without an understanding of symmetries and group transformations. Our objective is to identify and explore problems in algebra and group theory that are of relevance to the development of string theory, M-theory and other aspects of contemporary physics. In particular we will explore the role of conformal field theory, vertex operator algebras, representation theory and (extensions of) Lorentzian Kac-Moody groups and algebras in physics.
