This talk reports on joint work with Deng, Fujio and Rajan on optimal chaotic dynamics in mathematical economics revolving around the check-map and a model due to Robinson-Srinivasan-Solow — the RSS model. I hope to emphasize number-theoretic considerations, and touch on earlier work of Nathanson (1976 PAMS), and more conjecturally with two papers of Lagarias and co-authors (J. London Math. Soc. 1993; Ill. J. Math. 1994) on the asymmetric tent map. Geometry as an engine of analysis will also be emphasized.
