Can you hear the shape of a Beatty sequence?

A generalized polynomial is an element of the closure of the polynomial ring R[n] with the floor function. These have recently risen to prominence in ergodic theory, particularly in connection with rotations on nilmanifolds. In joint work with Ron Graham, we have considered special cases of the problem of recognizing whether a generalized polynomial is identically zero on the integers.
