Announcements and supplementary material
Final exam: schedule, coverage, review problems, review session, and
office hours
The final exam in Math 251, Sections 11–13, is scheduled for Thursday,
May 5, 12:00-3:00 PM, in SEC–117.
- The exam is cumulative, covering all the material in the
course, but there will be greater emphasis on material covered since the
second midterm.
- Formula sheet: You will be given a formula sheet containing
all the formulas from the first two exams plus some additional ones.
Here is a copy of the formula sheet so that
you can see what formulas will be given.
- Review: There will be a review/problem session on Wednesday,
May 4, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, in SEC 202.
Below is a set of review problems, including some short answers. These
problems concentrate on material we have covered since the last exam. To
review earlier material, use the review problems distributed for the
first two exams, the exams themselves, and homework problems. For your
convenience I have reposted the first two sets of review problems
below.
- Office hours: I will not hold my normal office hours during
reading perioid and exams, but will have an office hour Thursday, May 5,
9:00–10:00 AM, in Hill 520.
- Alexi's office hours: Alexi will hold extra office hours
Monday, May 2, 2:00–3:00 PM and Thursday, May 5, 10:00–11:30
AM.
Final exam schedule and conflict policy
The final exam in Math 251, Sections 11-13, is scheduled for Thursday,
May 5, from 12:00 to 3:00 PM, in SEC 117.
If you have an exam conflict and wish to request an alternative exam, you
must do so by Friday, April 22. Send me by email
(speer@math.rutgers.edu) a list of the courses generating the conflict
(see below), with the section numbers and exam times. Requests received
after April 22 will not be granted.
University policy on what constitutes an exam conflict is quite clear. A
student shall be said to have an exam conflict if that student has:
- More than two (2) exams on one calendar day.
- More than two (2) exams scheduled in consecutive periods. (E.g.: a
student has exams scheduled for 4:00 - 7:00 PM and 8:00 - 11:00 PM on one
day and 8:00 - 11:00 AM on the following day.)
- Two exams scheduled for the same exam period.
Exam times can be checked online
here. Please check your exams soon so that you can let me know about
any problem in a timely manner.
If you do have a conflict you are entitled to relief, but you do not get
to chose which exam is rescheduled. You should contact all the
instructors involved and ask about their policy. For example, some large
classes have standard alternative exams scheduled, and if this applies to
one of your classes then that is the natural exam to be rescheduled.
Exam 2
The second exam will be held Friday, April 8. It will cover all our
work since the first exam through the lecture of Friday, April 1, that is,
Sections 12.7, 14.8, 15.1–15.4, and 15.6–16.2 of the text. Of
course, much of the work we did earlier is relevant for these topics, and
will be assumed.
- No calculators are to be used on the exam. I will try to make
sure that all computations are simple. A few formulas will be given to
you; these are on the sheet of review problems (see below). No other
formula sheet or notes may be used.
- Here is a set of review problems. The
sheet includes short answers to most problems, as well as the formulas
that will be included on the exam.
- We will hold a problem/review session on Thursday, April 7,
8:10-9:30 PM, in SEC 203. I won't present any organized review,
but I will answer any questions you may have on the review problems or
anything else in the course.
- There will be no quiz in recitation on Wednesday, April 6; Alexi
will probably concentrate on more recent material but you can ask her
about anything in the course.
Solutions for Exam 2 are now posted on Sakai.
Exam 1
The first exam will be held Friday, February 26. It will cover
all our work through Friday, February 19, that is, through Section 14.7
of the text.
- No calculators are to be used on the exam. I will try to make
sure that all computations are simple. A few formulas (from Sections
13.4 and 14.7) will be given to you; these are on the sheet of review
problems (see below). No other formula sheet or notes may be used.
- Here is a set of review problems. The
sheet includes short answers to most problems, as well as the formulas
that will be included on the exam.
- We will hold a problem/review session on Thursday, February
25, 8:10-9:30 PM, in SEC 203. I won't present any organized
review, but I will answer any questions you may have on the review
problems or anything else in the course.
- There will be no quiz in recitation on Wednesday, February 24; Alexi
will probably concentrate on more recent material but you can ask her
about anything in the course.
