Final exam: schedule, coverage, review problems, review session, and
office hours
The final exam in Math 251, Sections 19–21, is scheduled for Tuesday,
May 12, 8:00-11:00 PM, in PH-111. Notice the
change of room to PH-111 in the Pharmacy building on Busch campus.
- The exam is cumulative, covering all the material in the
course, but there will be greater emphasis on material covered since the
second midterm.
- Formula sheet: You will be given a formula sheet containing at
least all the formulas from the first two exams. Here is a copy of the formula sheet so that you can
see what formulas will be given.
- Extra Recitation: Simao will hold an extra recitation
on Tuesday, May 5, 1:40-3:00 PM, in SEC 202. He intends mainly to go
over Section 17.3, and points out that this is of course not a mandatory
class.
- Review: There will be a review/problem session on Wednesday,
May 6, from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM, in SEC 205.
Below is a set of review problems, including some short answers. These
problems concentrate on material we have covered since the last exam. To
review earlier material, use the review problems distributed for the
first two exams, the exams themselves, and homework problems. For your
convenience I have reposted the first two sets of review problems
below.
- An extra recitation from Simao:
Simao will hold an extra
session to go over exercises from Chapter 17. This is tentatively
scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, from 1:40 PM to 3:00 PM.
Check back for definite schedule, and the room.
- Office hours: I will not hold my normal office hours during
reading perioid and exams, but will have special office hours:
-
Tuesday, May 5, 3:00–4:30 PM. Students from Math 421 have priority
at this time.
- Tuesday, May 12, 9:00–10:15. Students from Math 251 have priority.
Announcements and supplementary material
Exam 2
The second exam will be held Thursday, April 9. It will cover our
work since the first exam through Thursday, April 2, that is, Section
14.7 through Section 16.1, omitting 15.5 and 15.6. Of course, many of the
concepts that were covered on the first exam will still be
needed—vectors, the gradient, chain rule, etc. We will have
finished all the material for the exam by the end of the lecture on
Thursday, November 6.
- No calculators are to be used on the exam. I will try to make
sure that all computations are simple. A few formulas will be given to
you; these are on the sheet of review problems (see below). No other
formula sheet or notes may be used.
- Here is a set of review problems. The
sheet includes short answers to most problems, as well as the formulas
that will be included on the exam.
- We will hold a problem/review session on Monday, April 6,
8:10-9:30 PM, in SEC 118. I won't present any organized
review, but I will answer any questions you may have on the review
problems or anything else in the course.
Solutions for Exam 2 are now posted on Sakai.
Exam 1
The first exam will be held Thursday, February 26. It will cover
all our work through Thursday, February 19, that is, through Section 14.6
of the text.
- No calculators are to be used on the exam. I will try to make
sure that all computations are simple. A few formulas (from Sections
13.4) will be given to you; these are on the sheet of review
problems (see below). No other formula sheet or notes may be used.
- Here is a set of review problems. The
sheet includes short answers to most problems, as well as the formulas
that will be included on the exam.
- We will hold a problem/review session on Monday, February
23, 8:10-9:30 PM, in SEC 118. I won't present any organized
review, but I will answer any questions you may have on the review
problems or anything else in the course.
- There will be no quiz in recitation on Tuesday, February 24; Simao
will probably concentrate on more recent material but you can ask him
about anything in the course.
