Spring 2011 Announcements for Math 152
- Midterm Exam 1:
- Sara Soffer will have a review session for the first midterm exam
of Math 152 in Hill 114 on Friday, February 18, starting at 5 pm.
- In Examples 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 (pages 434-437 in the book) of section 7.3,
the textbook evaluates integrals using a table of formulas (including
reduction
formulas). Obviously, a student cannot use this method during an
exam.
You are only allowed to use the formula sheet that is provided with
the
exam booklet. The official formula sheet, which is linked below, does
not contain any reduction formulas and does not have any of the formulas
that the textbook uses in Examples 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 of section 7.3. Your
lecturer may include one particular reduction formula in the text
booklet,
but that is not the usual procedure for Math 152 exams. If an exam
problem requires a reduction formula, then you have to figure out the
type of reduction formula that is necessary,
and you have to derive that formula
(using integration by parts or some other appropriate method). Some
students memorize reduction formulas, but there are two reasons why
that may not be a good idea:
(1) You have to show work in all exam problems, and you may not get
credit
for showing work if you just write down a reduction formula and do not
include a derivation of the formula.
(2) There are too many reduction formulas, and it would take a very
long
time to memorize them. The time is much better spent doing exercises that
lead to understanding of the material. If you do enough integration
exercises, then you will be able to see which integration method or
methods are appropriate for a integration problem on an exam. In
general, we don't give hints on what method should be used
for a particular integration. See the link

These review problems only cover material relating to the last
few lectures of the course. The final exam covers the entire
semester. You should also study the review
problems for the first and second midterm exams.
The final exam will have problems that do not resemble any of
these review problems. The final exam will also have problems
that do resemble some of these review problems.
