What are the privileges of membership in the Second Chance Club?
If you qualify for membership, then your course grade will be computed in
two ways. The first way is the usual way, adding up all the scores
of exam 1, exam 2, the Final, and the score from the TA.
The second way, just the Final grade, multiplied by 2.5 (to make it out
of 500 instead of out of 200). Whatever is higher, is your course grade,
determined according to the scale:
460-500:A ;
430-459: B+ ;
400-429: B ;
370-399: C+ ;
325-369: C ;
280-324: D ;
0-279: F . No Curve!.
What do you need to do in order to join the Second Chance Club?
In order to qualify, you must
-
Don't write me Email asking me questions whose answers are clearly stated in this page.
-
Have perfect or almost perfect attendance. The total number of
absences allowed for the semester is three, and all of them
have to be fully justified.
-
Show up to the "optional" Marathon review on Dec. 11, 2008, 8:40-12:00 at SEC 117.
-
Carefully read and understand the
Avoiding Nonsense
guide. I will test your ability to avoid nonsense
in a multiple-choice test on Dec. 11, 2008, 12:10pm. You must get at least 16 out of the 20 questions
right to qualify (in addition to the other requirements).
-
Do all the problems labelled "Extra Problems for Practice for the Final" in:
You must do all the "extra" problems
(By all I mean all, not just those that you got wrong on the test!)
in both solution sets
(by both I mean both, not just your own section). This is due
on Monday, Dec. 1, 2008. Use your own loose leaf, and stick it inside an
envelope with your name and section, and put it on the shelf right accross from my
office Hill 704, by 10:00pm, Dec. 1, 2008.

Do all the problems in
Dr. Rong's Review Problems .
This is due on Monday, Dec. 8, 2008. Use your own loose leaf, and stick it inside an
envelope with your name and section, and put it on the shelf right accross from my
office Hill 704, by 10:00pm, Dec. 8, 2008.
[Note added Dec. 8, 2008: The deadline has been extended to Dec. 9, 2008,
10:00am]
Please make a xerox copy for yourself, since I will be posting the answers
on Tues., Dec. 9, 2008, and you should compare your answers to the correct answers and
make sure that you understand how to do them. I have no time to check
all your answers in detail, but I will make sure that you did your best effort.
-
Do all three practice Exams:
Added Dec. 8, 2008: Here are the
answers
to the three practice finals. Use them to check your own answers.
All students must do at least two, as homework, but prospective members of the SCC must do all three.
Bring them with you to the Final exam, and show them to your TA
(Mr. Bouch for sections 20-22, and
Mr. Ravikumar for Sections 07-09).

The few people who scored more than 90 in both exam 1 and exam 2,
(and have perfect or almost perfect attendance)
are automatically in the Second Chance Club. They are only required to hand-in the
required homework (two of the three practice exams). Of course, it is for their
own good to do as many problems as possible (including Dr. Rong's!).
They still have to show up to the Marathon review session on Dec. 11, 2008,
where I will be going through the practice Finals.
