Math 403, Section 2 Spring 2020 (Rutgers University) Class Policy

MODIFIED TO REFLECT SWITCH TO DISTANCE LEARNING

GRADE: The max. number of points is 500, with the following breakup.

• Neat and organized notebook: 20 points
• 10 Quizes, 8 points each, 80 points altogether
• 1 Midterm Exam: 150 points
• HOMEWORK: 50 points: To be mailed to DrZcomplex@gmail.com before the due date (either scanned handwriting, .txt (plain text), or .pdf )
• Final: 200 points.

• 450-500: A ;  
• 420-449: B+ ;  
• 390-419: B ;  
• 360-389: C+ ;  
• 315-359: C ;  
• 270-314: D ;  
• 0-269: F No Curve!.

• Attendance is strictly mandatory and enforced!

• No cell-phones, no laptops, no electronic devices. No Texting!

• It is also mandatory to take notes of everything I say in class. Please buy a SINGLE-SUBJECT notebook, and write on the cover: Comlex Variable Notebook. Also write your name and E-mail (in case it gets lost). Don't use it for any other subjects.

• Prepare a brown envelope and title it: Complex Algebra Homework. The homework will be inspected during the weekly quizzes. HOMEWORK IS MANDATORY. You will get 0 on the quiz if you don't do your homework.

• Take careful notes during the lectures and do all the homework.

• If you have a justified absence, then in your notebook, in the space where you would have taken classnotes, date it, explain why you were absent (e.g. tape-in doctor's note, or a signed statement: "I swear on my honor that I felt so bad that I couldn't make it"), and then in your own handwriting copy the posted lecture note from the on-line class.

• Every lecture will end with a 10-minute informal "quiz", asking you to do some problems covered in that day's class. It doesn't count towards the grade, but I use it first, to check attendance (it is more efficient than calling names), but more important, to make sure that you know how to do the problems, and in case that many people didn't get it, I'll try to do a better job in reviewing it. After each lecture the solution will be posted in the class webpage, and you should decide whether or not you got it right. If you didn't, you should make every attempt to come to office hours.

Arguing about the grade

If you believe that I made a mistake in grading, please write me a note in writing, explaining for each of the questions that you believe were graded incorrectly what my error was (or pointing out that I made a mistake in adding up the points). Attach it to the graded exam (or quiz) , and give it to me at the beginning of the class. I will return it to you during the following class, with either the corrected grade, or an explanation why it should not be changed.
