In the Kirk-Othmer Encyc. of Chemistry (John Wiley, 1995) in the chapter on Alkaloids, the section on ornithine derived, we find: Nicotine. Nicotine (16), a liquid alkaloid soluble in water, is one of the principal constituents of tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum and Duboisia hopwoodii F. Muell. The structure of nicotine was deduced in 1893 by Pinner: A. Pinner, Chem. Ber. 26, 294 (1893).
