What do you like best about this course?:

Pat. He's awesome.

Pat. But seriously, learning the concepts of vectors and subspaces was incredibly interesting, especially when thinking of how applicable the material is to my own major and interests.

You really generate interest and break the subject down easily then build upon that so we learn conceptually.

It got me to think about and do math in a way that I never had before

Everything!

Covers a new way of thinking about math, shows the omnipresence of linear algebra throughout mathematics and the sciences.

The instructor's enthusiasm, and explanation of why the stuff we are learning is useful.

The relation of material to real world problems and questions.

I like that he takes feedback from the students and tries every way to help them how they need it. He is also available for help always and always has reviews for material/

The logical consistency of Patrick's presentation of the material.

Pleasant environment to learn, professor was very enthusiastic and cared about the performance of the students

ANGRY BIRDS!!!!! actually everything about the way this course was taught was enjoyable. The class was engaging, and interesting, which is quite the contrast from a lot of my experience with math (and everything else) classes.

Couldn't have asked for a better instructor.

Everything. Best Class at rutgers

Very enthusiastic and engaging teaching style

Everything. Literally everything.

The professor

If you were teaching this course, what would you do differently?:

Nothing. Pat's teaching style was pretty much perfect.

Give more time for the quizzes. Maybe 20 minutes instead of 13 or so.

I wouldn't do anything differently because Pat totally does it way better than I could

Nothing I can think of.

Absolutely nothing.

I would pose more puzzle like questions.

I would stop erasing with my hand.

Assign graded homework

Absolutely nothing

I would teach it exactly like Pat.

nothing

Nothing, except get rid of matlab assignments

Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

get rid of matlabs

Use examples from the book for class lectures. That way it's easy for both the professor and the student to check the correct answer.

In what ways, if any, has this course or the instructor encouraged your intellectual growth and progress?:

Pat genuinely wants us to learn the material, and he teaches it in such a way that requires intellectual thought, and challenges us to think more than required.

I'm way more interested in linear algebra than I was before

Every way. I can actually say that for the first time ever, while at Rutgers, I learned during class time instead of always having to go home and forcefully teach myself the subject. And that has actually made me really enthusiastic about school again. I was always really excited about going to class to see what we would learn for the day. Getting homework done was actually enjoyable and I had fun with it. Learned a lot about Linear Algebra in a conceptual way. Most of my other classes went over it, but never got into the concepts behind it. Professors would just gloss over it and how it was done and then expected it to be done for exams and I can't learn that way. I couldn't put a matrix in rref to save my life until this class and I'm really happy to be able to say that I can do that now; among other things! :)

The instructor has shown the best way to teach a course and engage your students.

Not much.

He really wants us students to learn and that makes me want to learn even more because he really wants all of us to succeed.

Pat has genuine enthusiasm for the material, and in the way he teaches which in engaging and motivating. That enthusiasm is contagious.

I have learned about more than the material. The instructor was always willing to help with any math related questions and showed applications that were relevant to todays world.

Got me to see another aspect of math

In every way imaginable. Patrick Devlin is the man. It was an honor to be his student.

Normally I find it very difficult to maintain focus on a professor lecturing about material for anything longer than 15 min, however Patrick Devlin made the course not only informational but interesting and entertaining. He is a very talented professor.

Other comments or suggestions::

Pat encouraged us to think and learn, rather than to just plug and chug. He was passionate about what he was teaching, which was encouraging. Easily one of the best professors I've had here - and not because it was an easy A. He made it an attainable A by teaching really well and making us think and learn. On a different note, this course has a fair amount of overlap with Calc III, and should maybe be a prereq for Calc III. Jacobian determinants make much more sense if you have a basic understanding of linear algebra.

Pat is frickin' great

Hands down the best professor I've ever had! Thanks for bringing back a fun spark to school for me! Not sure how anonymous this thing has to be, but I am probably giving away who I am with this: Having to drive every day for an hour to and back from school (not including traffic jams and terrible weather) and struggling with coming up with money for school, gas and food and just all that dumb stressful stuff really makes it hard to feel happy or excited about school. Especially when professors are boring and uncaring for the past two years. So thanks so very much for not being one of those boring and uncaring professors, Pat!

Pat is one of the best teachers/professors I have had. Amazing class, amazing professor. Makes sure the entire class understands the material, makes the material very intuitive, manages to cover difficult material and have his class understand it simultaneously.

I would suggest to be more organize with the board.

I really don't have any additional comments, the course is great.

Pat's great. Give him more money because he's so great.

The big bird needs a name

Pat=Best Instructor at Rutgers. End of Story

Taught very well I just already knew most of the material so I didn't learn much new.

Patrick is a BRILLIANT man. Knows everything. Best professor I have ever had at Rutgers. Incalculably BRILLIANT.

Get rid of matlabs

Awesome professor, cares a lot about getting his students to understand the concepts of linear algebra.
