Math 338 -- Fall 2007

WEEKS 1 and 2. Solutions to Weeks 1 and 2.(There were some mistakes in the first solutions. These are corrected as of Feb. 1; please refer to the corrected version.
Discussion. Many students had problems formulating the outcome space in 2.1.1. The idea is to build it directly from the description to capture the idea that every pair of individuals is equally likely to be chosen. (One is NOT sampling so that every one of the 4 pairs GG GY YG YY is equally likely.) Then one is to use the correct probability space to derive probabilities of the different combinations of alleles appearing. Please study the solutions.
I did not grade the part of 3.2.6 that relied on the Central Limit Theorem, as we had not covered that in class, but you can look at the solutions to see how it is done.
WEEK 3. Solutions to second homework assignment.
Discussion. The class as a whole had great difficulty with these problems. These problems are all based on the reasoning that goes into building the basic model of section 3.3.1 of the text and deriving Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. This is fundamental stuff and I expect you to know it and to be able to set up and analyze similar models in a similar model. So study these solutions carefully!

Discussion If you downloaded these before about noon on 2/20, please download again. The answer to problem 5 had some dumb mistakes that could be potentially confusing.
On problem 2, many of you did not try to find the explicit solutions. You should be able to do this; the formulas and techniques are in the first section of Chapter 3 and in the handout on difference equations. Problem 8 required a conceptual idea that is not immediately obvious. Many of you understood the solution had to with a fixed point of the equations for $f_A(t)$ when selection is acting. The problem statement turns out to be inconsistent and a little ambiguous. I gave a handout in class correcting this and discussing the problem. Study the solutions on this!
